Our motto is: BELONG ~ BELIEVE ~ BECOME

Our pupils belong to God’s family, to the church family and to St John’s family.

We support them to believe in God, in each other and in themselves.

We encourage them to become the best person they can become.

Catholic Social Teaching

Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is rooted in Scripture, shaped by Church tradition, and informed by real-world experience. It guides us in living out our faith with compassion, justice and respect for all people.

In school, children explore CST through the lens of moral decision-making. They’re encouraged to think critically, act with empathy, and recognise their power to make a difference—however small—in a complex and often unjust world.

At the heart of CST is the belief that every person is equal and should be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of race, gender, religion or background. Our curriculum and wider school life reflect this, providing pupils with meaningful opportunities to learn about justice and put it into action.

We are inspired by the 7 principles of Catholic Social Teaching:

  • Dignity of the human person

  • Solidarity

  • The common good

  • The option for the poor

  • Peace

  • Care for creation

  • The dignity of work and participation

We aim to follow Christ’s example by loving God and our neighbours, especially those most in need. Through our actions, we seek to bring God’s peace and justice into the world.

Our Mission Statement

“Let Your Light Shine”

  • Belong: We All Belong Together

Just like branches grow on a vine, everyone in the school is connected. This means teachers, students, and friends all help each other, and we all belong to one big "school family." Here, everyone is welcome, and we all have a special place.

  • Believe: Believe in Helping Each Other Grow

The vine gives life to the branches, just like the school gives students the support they need to learn new things and become their best selves. Believe that teachers and friends are here to help you grow – not just in schoolwork, but also in kindness, friendship, and helping others.

  • Become: Everyone is Important and Can Become Their Best

Each branch is a little different, and that's great! In our school, every student is special and important. Just like branches on a vine, everyone has something unique to offer. Believe in yourself, and know that you can become your best self with the help of those around you.

  • Together, We Belong, Believe, and Become

The branches on a vine work together to make something wonderful. In the same way, everyone in the school can work together to make the school a happy place where we can all belong, believe in ourselves and each other, and become who we’re meant to be – kind, helpful, and caring people who make a difference in the world.

By belonging and believing, we let our lights shine to become true disciples of Jesus.

Original - We belong to God’s loving family, we believe in God and we let our lights shine to become servant-hearted.

Values

In order to achieve this ethos within our school and the wider community that we serve, there are a number of values and principles which guide our actions in school.

First and foremost are the values that are at the heart of the Gospels:

Our core values infiltrate the whole of our school ethos, but we focus particularly on one per half-term to help the children, particularly our youngest children, to truly understand the meaning of the value:

We believe that these values will help us to be the best we can be.

Our Value Link to Catholic Values Bible Link
Autumn 1 Respect Love and Solidarity This means to regard highly, value, honour. "Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honour the king." (1 Peter 2: 17)
Autumn 2 Honesty Faithfulness and Integrity This means having strong moral principles e.g. honesty, decency, fairness, equality; having pure and balanced moral character. “Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways." (Proverbs 28: 6)
Spring 1 Kindness Humility and Gentleness

“So in everything, do to others as you would have them do to you, for this sums up the laws and the Prophets”.

(Matthew 7: 12)

Spring 2 Compassion Dignity and Compassion This means having a deep awareness and sympathy for another's suffering. “All of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.” (1 Peter 3: 8)
Summer 1 Tolerance Tolerance and Peace “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.” (Luke 6: 37)
Summer 2 Forgiveness Forgiveness and Mercy “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Ephesians 4: 32)

The Wednesday Word

Each week, we share The Wednesday Word with families. It’s a simple, family-friendly leaflet that helps you reflect together at home. It links directly to the Gospel for the coming Sunday and is designed to be accessible for all ages.

We focus on the week's 'word' in school every Wednesday morning. Parents and carers are welcome to join us for this. During school closures, we continue this via our online platform.
